Finding Balance in a Crowded World

Being balanced emotionally starts with our thoughts! Our emotions are fickle, they are the shadow of our thoughts, following them where they may go. It’s important that we not be controlled by them, but rather, be in control of them. The saying, “You are what you think” is true and now science is proving it. The field of neuroscience which studies the structure and function of the brain, through the power of technology, is now able to show that our thoughts literally effect the physical nature of our brain.

This is new and exciting in the science world, but it only backs up what much of Scripture has to say.

Romans 12: 1 – 3 says,  “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good, pleasing and perfect.”(NLT)

By committing ALL of our physical bodies, which includes our brains to the Lord and choosing to be transformed by changing the way we THINK, we will be able to walk out the Lord’s will for our life, which is good, pleasing and perfect. The Lord’s will is that we would walk in joy and peace not with fear, anxiety and depression.

Romans 15:13 says, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you willoverflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”(NLT)

As we choose to trust in the Lord, not in the authorities of this world, the banks or our own plans, we will have joy and peace. Again, in

Philippians 4:6-7, Paul says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

So when we choose to not worry, but to take EVERY concern to the Lord in prayer and trust Him with it, He will give us peace. Peace when the storm is still raging around us, peace when we have violence towards both citizens and police of our own towns, peace when everyone else is full of fear.

Paul goes on to say in verses 8 & 9. “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

There are many more scriptures that speak of where we allow our thoughts to go will dictate whether or not we walk in God’s peace and joy or we walk in anguish and turmoil. Finally, science is catching up and proving this to be true through their vast studies on neurotransmitters.

So, what are neurotransmitters?  They are chemical messengers in our brain that allow the billions of neurons to communicate with each other. And although there is a great deal more needed to fully explain how this process works, I can say that they play a role in libido, sleep, addictions, how we handle stress, mood regulation, and our ability to concentrate and remember.

So, when even one or several neurotransmitters are deficient, they can lead to depression, anxiety, OCD, anger, sleep deprivation and much more…  Sometimes there is a need to treat this deficiency with prescription medication, but that may not always be necessary.  Neurotransmitters are built through a healthy diet, exercise, healthy relationships and positive thinking.

Basically, the bottom line is that being balanced emotionally rests on what we choose to dwell on!  No one has to be the victim of their own circumstances.  We are all children of the Most High God, who loves us immensely, we can choose to believe what He says about us and our future, or we can allow all the crowded messages of this world dictate our future.  In the end, it’s our choice and no one can take your choices away!
